2014 Women's World Karate Championships Report

The 2014 Women's World Karate Championships was held in Japan at the Tokyo Gymnasium on April 20th as part of the 2014 International Karate Friendship.

In the light weight, Elena Gulko (Russia) defeated the last year's champion Natsuki Ota (Japan) by 5-0 unanimous decision in the 1st OT (overtime). .

5 times and 2011 Women's Open tournament champion Anastasia Khripunova (RUSSIA) and Chihiro Tanaka(JAPAN) were the finalist in the middle weight.
Khripunova who finished 3rd in last year's tournament came back strong with a convincing 5-0 decision in the main round to claim her 6th title. Last year's All Japan Open Tournament champion Tomomi Yokoyama (JAPAN) lost in the quarter final to 4th place Dilshoda Umarova(RUSSIA).
In the Heavy Weight Uliana Grebenshchikova (RUSSIA) who became champion in last year's tournament for the first time at age 18 beat Anna Egorova (RUSSIA) with two Waza-ari (combined Ippon) to win back to back titles.
As a result Russian fighters were champions in all 3 categories in this year's tournament.
